Yo Ho, Yo Ho, A Pirate's Life For Me

My latest review shall be for the newly released film in the Pirates of the Caribbean Franchise; On Stranger Tides.

Let me state this first: This isn't a bad film. In fact, it's quite entertaining. But in terms of the movie trying to go above and beyond what has come before in this series, it unfortunately end up falling short of its reach.
With the Keira Knightley/Orlando Bloom story arc having wrapped itself up, we are introduced to a new cast of characters, most notably those of villainous Blackbeard (Ian Mcshane) and his daughter Angelica (Penelope Cruz). Blackbeard brings his own set of supernatural nick nacks, and this is where I had a problem with the movie. Possessing the ability to telekinetically control the masts, sails, and rigging of his ship, there were numerous moments where he conveniently forgot he was capable of it.
The other problem with the story involves a young missionary along for the ride against his will. While the character himself showed promise, the plot failed to really utilize him properly. Instead, all he got was a sub-par subplot that comes out of left field involving a growing fancy toward a mermaid.
(On a side note, one impressive feat they did pull off was hiding the pregnancy of Penelope Cruz. There wasnt a single shot that her ever growing baby bump was visible)
All in all, though it's still enjoyable, it does not manage to equal the brilliance of the first movie, and ultimately, a person could skip this one and find themselves having not missed anything. There are bound to be some better flicks out this summer.
